Questions new drivers ask

Your licence

How old do I need to be to get a driving licence in Qatar?

18 for a car (light vehicle) or motorcycle licence. 21 for heavy vehicles, buses and equipment such as forklifts, excavators and cranes.

What documents do I need to register?

Your Qatar ID (or passport and visa copy), a no-objection certificate from your sponsor on Metrash, passport-size photos and an eye test result. Bring your home-country licence too if you have one — it may qualify you for a shorter course.

How does my sponsor issue the NOC?

On Metrash: Traffic → Licence services → Licence NOC. They enter your QID or visa number, choose "New issue" and the licence category, then confirm. Qatari men do not need an NOC; for Qatari women the guardian issues it.

Can I convert my driving licence from another country in Qatar?

Yes, if it is valid and issued by one of 33 approved countries (including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most of Western Europe, Japan and Singapore) — no course or test needed. GCC licences go straight to a road test, and most other licences qualify for the half course. Use the checker on our licence conversion page.

How long does it take to get my licence?

It depends on the course, your availability and test dates. Fast Track and VIP are designed to get you there sooner — message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you the current waiting time.

How much is the licence itself?

Paid to the Traffic Department on Metrash after you pass. Car: QAR 250 for 5 years for residents, QAR 500 for 10 years for Qataris. Motorcycle: QAR 150 / 300. Heavy vehicle and equipment: QAR 300 / 600.

Courses and instructors

What is the difference between Standard, Fast Track and VIP?

All three cover the same curriculum and number of classes. Fast Track shortens the waiting time between lessons and adds optional door-to-door pickup. VIP adds priority lesson and road-test dates with no waiting list, a premium car and simulator training.

Who can take the half course?

The half course needs approval from the Traffic Department. It is usually granted to people who already hold a licence from another country. Bring your licence and we will check your eligibility.

Do you have female instructors?

Yes. Car courses are available with male or female instructors. A female trainee with a male instructor may bring a male guardian to lessons.

Automatic or manual — which should I learn on?

If you pass on an automatic car your licence only covers automatics. Passing on manual lets you drive both. Most people choose automatic; choose manual if your job may need it.

Tests

What happens if I fail a test?

Each course includes a set number of test chances (4 for a full course). Extra attempts cost QAR 50 each, and you can add extra classes if you need more practice. The Unlimited programme keeps going until you pass.

Which languages are the theory lessons and test in?

The Traffic Department curriculum and theory test are available in many languages, not only Arabic and English. Our instructors are multilingual — tell us your language when you book and we will confirm.

The academy

Do you offer transport to the academy?

Yes. Free group transport runs from designated areas including Al Rayyan, Al Aziziya, Msheireb, Al Gharrafa, Al Wakrah, West Bay, Lusail and The Pearl. Fast Track and VIP students can add door-to-door pickup.
