How to get a driving licence in Qatar

A clear, step-by-step guide for new drivers and expats: eligibility, documents, tests, timings and every fee — kept up to date by Al Nasr Driving Academy.

Last checked:

Getting a driving licence in Qatar follows one official process, set by the General Directorate of Traffic at the Ministry of Interior. Every approved driving school teaches the same curriculum and every learner sits the same tests. The difference is how clearly the process is explained to you, how good your instructor is and how quickly you get test dates. This guide explains each step in plain language.

From eye test to licence in seven stops

  1. 1

    Eye test

Done at the academy in a few minutes, or bring a result from an optician approved by the Traffic Department. If you wear glasses or lenses, wear them for the test.

    Fee:
    QAR 50 at the academy
  2. 2

Register and open your traffic file

Bring your documents and choose your course. We open your file with the Traffic Department and issue your learning licence, which is valid for 3 months.

    Bring:
QID, NOC on Metrash, photos, eye test
    Fee:
Learning licence QAR 150 (included in all-in prices)
  3. 3

    Theory lessons

Traffic law, road signs, right of way and basic vehicle checks, taught in several languages. You get the official handbook to study at home.

  4. 4

    Theory (signal) test

A computer test at the academy, available in many languages. You must pass it before you can book your road test.

  5. 5

    Practical training

One-to-one lessons with your instructor on our yard and on real roads, including L (perpendicular) and P (parallel) parking. You can only practise in an academy vehicle.

  6. 6

    Parking and road test

The L and P parking tests are computerised with instant results. The road test is taken in an academy car and assessed by a Traffic Police officer.

    Fee:
    QAR 50 per test attempt
  7. 7

    Collect your licence

You get an SMS when you pass. Pay the licence fee on Metrash (Traffic → Licence services → Issue driving licence) and your licence is issued.

    Fee:
Car: QAR 250 for 5 years (residents), QAR 500 for 10 years (Qataris)

What to bring on your first visit

Pick your situation and tick off each item. Everything ready? Send us the list on WhatsApp and we will book your registration.

You have never held a licence, or your licence is from a country that needs the full course.

Already have a licence from another country?

Holders of a valid licence from 33 approved countries — including the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia, most of Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia — can exchange it directly at the Traffic Department, with no course and no test. GCC licence holders sit a direct road test. Most other licences qualify for a half course (20 practical classes instead of 40).

Bring your original licence (with a certified translation if it is not in Arabic or English) when you register and we will tell you which route applies. If you qualify for a direct test, you can rent one of our vehicles for the test day.

Automatic or manual?

A licence obtained on an automatic car only allows you to drive automatic cars. If you pass on a manual car you can drive both. Most learners choose automatic; choose manual if your job may require it.

Rules worth knowing before you start

You may only practise in a driving school vehicle with an instructor — never in a private car. You must pass the theory test before you can book a road test. Your learning licence is valid for three months, so plan your lessons around it. A female trainee with a male instructor may bring a male guardian to lessons.

After you pass

You receive an SMS from the Traffic Department. Open Metrash, go to Traffic → Licence services → Issue driving licence, and pay the fee by card. Residents receive a 5-year licence; Qatari citizens a 10-year licence.

Questions new drivers ask

How old do I need to be to get a driving licence in Qatar?

18 for a car (light vehicle) or motorcycle licence. 21 for heavy vehicles, buses and equipment such as forklifts, excavators and cranes.

What documents do I need to register?

Your Qatar ID (or passport and visa copy), a no-objection certificate from your sponsor on Metrash, passport-size photos and an eye test result. Bring your home-country licence too if you have one — it may qualify you for a shorter course.

How does my sponsor issue the NOC?

On Metrash: Traffic → Licence services → Licence NOC. They enter your QID or visa number, choose "New issue" and the licence category, then confirm. Qatari men do not need an NOC; for Qatari women the guardian issues it.

Can I convert my driving licence from another country in Qatar?

Yes, if it is valid and issued by one of 33 approved countries (including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most of Western Europe, Japan and Singapore) — no course or test needed. GCC licences go straight to a road test, and most other licences qualify for the half course. Use the checker on our licence conversion page.

What happens if I fail a test?

Each course includes a set number of test chances (4 for a full course). Extra attempts cost QAR 50 each, and you can add extra classes if you need more practice. The Unlimited programme keeps going until you pass.

Which languages are the theory lessons and test in?

The Traffic Department curriculum and theory test are available in many languages, not only Arabic and English. Our instructors are multilingual — tell us your language when you book and we will confirm.

How long does it take to get my licence?

It depends on the course, your availability and test dates. Fast Track and VIP are designed to get you there sooner — message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you the current waiting time.

How much is the licence itself?

Paid to the Traffic Department on Metrash after you pass. Car: QAR 250 for 5 years for residents, QAR 500 for 10 years for Qataris. Motorcycle: QAR 150 / 300. Heavy vehicle and equipment: QAR 300 / 600.

Requirements are set by the General Directorate of Traffic and can change. We confirm the current rules with you when you register.
